Description
The Floating Memories exhibition at the Brighton Fishing Museum presents some of the highlights from the club’s 150-year-old archive. The summer of 1946 was a landmark for Brighton. After six years, the barbed wire at the entrances to the beaches had gone and people could sunbathe and swim. For many children it was their first access to the pebbles. Roger Dunford, of Brighton Swimming Club, took his 16MM film camera out in a rowing boat to the Palace Pier climbed to the top, sat on the sign, waved and recorded unique 16mm film footage. This now forms part of the Floating Memories exhibition chronicling the Club’s history and Brighton’s close bonds with the sea. Visitors will be greeted by members of the project team to hear stories about the intrepid one-legged swimming instructor Ctn Henry Camp who founded the Club in 1860 and discover what members enjoyed doing 100 years ago - acquatic tea parties, water polo competitions and high diving from the Chain, West and Palace Piers!
