Fashionable Brighton, 1820 - 1860
by Antony Dale
This classic account of Brighton, first published in 1947 and now reissued, is
a must for all amateurs of late Georgian architecture and for students of
the early nineteenth century. Taking 1820 as his starting point, Antony
Dale gives an entertaining yet authoritative account of the architecture,
planning development and social live of the city. He describes the work
of the outstanding personalities of the time - Thomas Read Kemp, the promoter
of Kemp Town; the architects Charles Augustin Busby, Amon Wilds and the
latter's son, Amon Henry Wilds; and the great contractor Thomas Cubitt.
Anthony Dale (1912-1993), who spent all his life in Brighton, was Honorary Secretary of the Regency Society of Brighton and Hove for forty years.
