MyHouseMyStreet

Who lived in your house in the 19th century?

Our Heritage Lottery funded MyHouseMyStreet project aims to find out. Using Census records and local Directories going back to the 1840s, we aim to complete a database of residents in Brighton and Hove from 1841 to 1974.

Many of our volunteers have been involved in the project: researching the history of streets, transcribing source documents, organising street exhibitions and tours, contributing to the website, or all of the above!

Volunteers have held street exhibitions in fourteen streets, with four more planned, displaying posters listing past occupants for each house, and offering guided tours. We have also completed several street histories exploring the development, architecture, and social history of Brighton & Hove's 'back streets'.

Our current focus is on the North Laine area. If you are interested in researching the history of the North Laine, or indeed of any Brighton or Hove street/area, do get in touch. Take a look at MyHouseMyStreet for further details or contact us.
