Open Door - 2004 revue

A closer look at Brighton & Hove's architectural treasures!

Staged over the second weekend of September, Open Door provided guided walks and public access to some of our city's most interesting buildings - many of which are usually hidden from the public eye.

In all, 37 events were offered, some affording unlimited access while others had to be pre-booked.

The Edwardian Baroque facade remains largely unaltered, although originally it was topped by two small domes. Hove

Saturday 11 September, 10.00am -12.00pm

Contact: Pat Rodway
01273 777736

Notes: full wheelchair access including lifts. Toilets and limited parking also available

Information: 157 is a Art Deco masterpiece and a trip to this magnificent building is not to be missed for fans of the genre. Designed in 1934 by architect Robert Cromie (renowned for his cinema designs) 157 was built for eccentric millionaire Ian Stewart Miller a man who had made fortunes in iron and steel industries and who was a well known film director of the period. With these cinematic interest it is perhaps not surprising that 157's interior is dominated by cinema-like features.

So particular was Miller that his home should be unique that upon completion of the building program he had all the surplus hand made bricks buried so that no one could imitate the extraordinary green exterior he had created.

Today the property is now known as Barford Court and is a Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution nursing and residential care home which successful marries the original house with a purpose-built extension and a conservatory overlooking elegant gardens.

Notes: one step at the entrance of the building, but otherwise there is full wheel chair access and there are guides available, toilets available, children welcome.

Information: In 1874 a project for a new synagogue in Brighton was put out to tender. It was won by Thomas Lainson, a well known local architect and the new synagogue opened in 1875. The exterior has been described as both Byzantine and Romanesque and looks slightly out of place in its side street home.

The interior, described by Anthony Dale as amongst the most splendid synagogue interiors in Europe, it certainly is quite spectacular. It was originally fairly plain, but between 1880 - 1915, donations gradually furnished the building with wrought iron, brass work and stained glass windows, transforming it into the lavish interior that can be seen today. The building now has grade 2* Listed status and despite dwindling numbers is still used regularly for worship.

30 . St John the Baptist Church

Saint John the Baptist Church

Hove
East Sussex

Open For Viewing
Saturday 11 September, 9.30am - 5.00pm

Contact: Christine Wilson
01273 721176

Notes: accessible toilets, children welcome

Information: The church was built in 1852 for the inhabitants of Adelaide Crescent and Palmeira Square, on a site donated by Isaac Lyon Goldsmid in 1848 and to designs by Edward Habershon. It quickly became the fashionable church for Hove during the later nineteenth century and through to the First World War. After this All Saints Church in the Drive took pride of place.

Today Saint John's is a practical example of new uses for old churches. It has been divided into three parts, the chancel and crossing remain in use as the church, the former south aisle and hall (1902) have become a day centre and the nave and north aisle have been converted into a modern three storey community centre.

During Saturday visitors will find a guide in the church to provide further details. After viewing the church visitors are invited to the roof top café for the best cheap tea and coffe in Hove.
