QueenSpark Books - Backyard Brighton

13 Brunswick Square, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1EH

In 1988, QueenSpark published a seminal book, 'Backyard Brighton', featuring photographs taken by Brighton Borough Council of houses scheduled for demolition during the 1930s.

Each photograph is accompanied by reminiscences of families who lived in the houses, offering a fascinating insight into the lives of working people from the ’30s to the ’50s, and a unique record of areas of Brighton long gone.

With thanks to the family of Selma Montford, QueenSpark has recently acquired the original large prints used to inspire the reminiscences, and they will go on show for the first time in this unique exhibition.

For 50 years QueenSpark has been publishing the stories of the city. Following the response to the display of our archive at Heritage Open Day 2022, we are also delighted to announce that every one of our 117 books and a collection of the early newsletters will again be available to view and handle. There will also be a range of QueenSpark titles for sale, specially discounted for Heritage Open Days.

The Development of North Laine as Brighton’s Industrial and Commercial Suburb

Join Peter Crowhurst for a wander through the streets and twittens of North Laine to Trafalgar St and then back to Church St.

The tour will last approximately two hours. There are no mobility issues as such although participants will need to be able to keep up with the pace of the group.

North Laine was once Brighton’s industrial suburb with water, animals and wood being processed into beer, ginger beer and mineral water, meat and furniture. Much of North Laine’s Victorian townscape is still there to be seen and in recognition of this, North Laine became a Conservation Area in 1977. If you would like to know more about North Laine’s history and the buildings which reflect that history, why not join me on one of my guided walks around the area?

Brighton Unitarian Church

Unitarian Church, New Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 1UF

Visit this historical Regency church where a member of the church, well-informed about its history, will be available to answer your questions.

The church was built in 1820 on land purchased from the Prince Regent.

The congregation of this church dates from 1793 when nineteen members of a Calvinist Baptist chapel in what is now Bond Street were expelled for adopting Universalist beliefs derived from the writings of the American Baptist preacher, Elhanan Winchester.

The church building was completed in August 1820. Dr Morell, a well-known classical scholar, was appointed as the first minister of the church. Due in large part to his influence, the design of the church was inspired by the ancient Temple of Theseus in Athens. It was designed by the well-known local architect Amon Henry Wilds – who built much of Brighton’s fashionable Kemp Town.

Attractive stained glass windows are an interesting feature of a simple, recently renovated and decorated, interior. Come and see our Grade II listed Regency building. One of the first classical places of worship in the city.

The Regency Town House, 13 Brunswick Square, Hove, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1EH

Mrs Finnegan, Housekeeper at The Regency Town House will run a confidence-building writing workshop that is suitable for both beginners and those with experience who are interested in writing historical and period fiction.

The historian will tell you what happened. The novelist will tell you what it felt like.
E. L. Doctorow

The tutor is Bridget Whelan who writes about the 1830s as Mrs Finnegan, the fictional housekeeper at The Regency Town House. Bridget has taught creative writing on university courses and in adult education for over 15 years and won $4000 in an international writing competition with a short story set in the 1950s. She has published one novel - set in the early 1960s - and is now writing about the 1980s which doesn’t seem very far away.

Together we will explore the many forms historical fiction can take, work on short exercises that explore useful techniques and look at how to overcome the challenges facing writers of historical fiction

If you've already started a writing project or have one in mind, Bridget will aim to put time aside so you can discuss it on a one-to-one basis (but this may have to be after the class ends).

Rottingdean Windmill

Rottingdean Windmill, Beacon Hill, A259 Brighton Road, Rottingdean, East Sussex, BN2 7JA

This smock windmill was erected here on Beacon Hill in 1802 by Thomas Beard, and the carved initials, TB 1802, can be seen on one of the internal timbers.

Rottingdean Windmill ground corn for the village, and supplied flour to the local bakers. Around 1877 George Nicholls was miller and baker, and his little son Harry had the job of delivering hot rolls around the village before school. They lived in the High Street and George was the last miller when the Mill ceased to function in 1881.

As part of a Millennium Project, the Preservation Society replaced some of the wooden cant posts and work continues on this Grade 2 listed landmark here on Beacon Hill!

Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station

Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station, Brighton Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 6RN

Come and visit our lifeboat station for a fun, free and unique experience. You’re invited to meet the crew, see the lifeboats and immerse yourself in our rich history

Eight Medals for gallantry have been awarded – five Silver and three Bronze, the last award was in 1980.

There are records of a lifeboat being stationed here in 1845 by the Shoreham Harbour Commissioners, a boat 30ft by 8¾ft pulling 12 oars and costing £100. This lifeboat appears to have saved two lives.

The present station was established by the Institution in 1865 and it was closed in 1924 owing to lack of water due to silting. Five years later in 1929 the harbour bar which existed in 1924 having disappeared, it was decided to re-open the station and place a motor lifeboat there.

Located on the south coast of England. It houses one of the Royal National Lifeboat Institutions modern 'Tamar' class all weather lifeboats. It also houses a smaller 'D' class inshore lifeboat. The station is set over three levels and is fully accessible as there is a lift to all levels.

The Fascinating Mr Ranger and Early British Concrete Heritage

The Regency Town House, 13 Brunswick Square, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1EH

During this period. Working sometimes jointly with Barry and at other times alone, Ranger also undertook many other local projects including repairs to the property of Mrs Dulany, the extension of the Royal Pavilion, the building of Admiral Codrington's home, the creation of sunken gardens for Kemptown residents and the formation of the Brighton Sea Walls. In almost all of these sites, he deployed 'Ranger's Artificial Stone', a product for which he subsequently acquired patents in 1832 and 1834. All Saints’ Church, Patcham

All Saints Church, Church Hill, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 8YE

Come and visit our 12th Century church with its fascinating Doom Painting, medieval memorial and gravestones in beautiful Patcham Village.

The present church has a history dating back to Saxon times, (possibly as early as the 700s). There are striking similarities with other Sussex Downland churches nearby, such as Pyecombe and Clayton, in terms of construction and overall design. It is built in flint which was widely used for building construction in Sussex in the middle ages, with sections of the present building dating from as early as the 12th century. All Saints was listed as Grade 2* in 1952 and is the Parish Church of Patcham. In the nave of the church and positioned over the chancel arch is a rare 13th century Last Judgement or Doom Painting, whitewashed over at the time of the purges of the Reformation then rediscovered during renovations in 1880-1883.

‘Quiet Down There’ and sound artist Anna Edmonds invite you to a taster listening session of their developing heritage soundwalk project ‘Along These Lines’.

Along These Lines is an immersive soundwalk that explores Brighton's laundry heritage.

Laundry is a distinctly aural and sensory experience, we often hear people talk of the sounds, smells and feels that come with a trip to the laundrette, and many local people remember someone in their family working in laundry services.

We know laundries have been a site for organising, meeting, and connecting for over 200 years, often becoming hotbeds of activism for women’s suffrage and solidarity, but so far these incredible stories have not had the recognition they deserve. In this session, listeners will be invited to visit a selection of locations which are part of a developing audio tour of local laundry history.

Please bring your own mobile phone and headphones for personal listening, headphones and splitters will be available for anyone wishing to share their listening with a friend.

This is an outdoor session which will involve some walking, please wear comfortable shoes and bring any necessary weather gear.

Sussex Masonic Centre

Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 3YH

25 Queens Road, the headquarters of Sussex Freemasonry consists of two separate buildings joined together and added to Windsor House, constructed in about 1828.

The Art Deco extension was completed in 1928 and was designed specifically for Masonic use, the interior remains unchanged and reflects the architectural and interior design of the period.

The magnificent staircase and Masonic meeting rooms retain their original features and are currently home to over 90 separate masonic lodges and orders. Join the Curator for a fascinating tour which will detail the development of the building and of the area in the nineteenth century.
